Swimming Teams Face Biggest 2009 Foe

Sharon opens season vs. Mansfield tonight.

Last year, the Sharon High School boys and girls swimming teams each went 5-3 and "Mansfield was our biggest rival," coach Adrienne Smutko says.

So, guess who Sharon opens its seasons against tonight?

The Eagles face the Hornets at 7:30 at Wheaton College in Norton.

Smutko is looking forward to competitive meets tonight, based on the teams' last meeting.

"It was our best meet," says Smutko, in her second year leading Sharon.

"Even though we lost, they pushed kids to bring their fastest times. I think we lost by two points."

The boys team, Smutko says, "looks solid. We have a lot of good freestylers. We have a lot of good distance swimmers. We have to work on our fly lineup."

The girls team is "starting off at a really good place. They haven't lost anything that they did last year. They're also a young team, though," she says.

Two flyers will lead the boys squad: senior captains Ben Pedersen and Jake Utter.

"They're both awesome kids," Smutko says.

"Wonderful personalities about them. They work really well with the younger swimmers."

The girls' captains are two seniors: flyer Michelle Shknevsky and distance swimmer Megan Blatchford.

"They have really great leadership qualities," Smutko says.

"They're organizers. And Megan, she has this incredible positive energy about her."

Diving captain Amy Foster, a senior, has "been really kind of pushing this program forward," Smutko says.

"In Massachusetts, diving really isn't a big sport. It's not really a popular sport anymore. She said, 'We absolutely won't cut this program. I will find people to dive for this team.'"

Junior Michael Schanz and freshman Jen Silva will be in Sharon's diving lineup this year.

Smutko also is looking forward to seeing the performance of sophomore Will Sweet, who's "an awesome breaststroker."

"He's looking to get a state time this year," she says.
