Success Motivates SHS Girls Winter Track Team

Eagles finish season 3-1, prepare for Saturday's Hockomock championships.

The Sharon High School girls winter track team believes it'll do well during Saturday's Hockomock League championships.

A successful dual meet season is driving that confidence, says senior Sara Gildersleeve, who captains the squad with classmate Caroline McClain.

Sharon finished with a 3-1 record, according to www.sharoneaglestrack.com.

"I really feel like it motivates people more, because now we know we can do great things," Gildersleeve said.

The Hockomock League championships start at 8:30 a.m. at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Roxbury.

Gildersleeve predicted Sharon would do well in such events as the 4 by 400 relay and the sprints.

She also noted the Eagles' strong upperclass group, which includes such freshmen as fellow sprinter Madison Tippett and high jumper Rita Kushner, and junior hurdler Meri Kushner, who is finishing her first indoor season.

"It's good to see people keep coming in," Gildersleeve said.

Only four seniors are on the roster: Gildersleeve, McClain, Meaghan Perry and Kelsey Sullivan.

McClain has led Sharon in the middle distances. She won the mile in the Eagles' season-opening win over Foxborough, 60.33 to 25.67, on Dec. 11. Perry won the 1000 meters.

In the same meet, Rita Kushner won the high jump, followed right behind by her sister.

And sophomore Anna Fratello won both the shot put and the 600 meters.
