A car struck a utility pole on Central Street in Stoughton early this morning, seriously injuring the driver and causing a power outage.

Sharon and Stoughton firefighters responded to the crash, which happened at 1:27 a.m. at 1906 Central St., near Mill Street, Stoughton Fire Capt. Robert O'Donnell said.

The crash broke the pole in half, bringing down wires, O'Donnell said. The driver, a male, was ejected from the vehicle and found unconscious underneath the front bumper of the car, O’Donnell said.

With a medical helicopter unavailable, an ambulance took the driver to the Boston Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, O'Donnell said. 

The driver's name was not available.

The damage to the utility pole knocked out power for some residents in surrounding neighborhoods, according to an outage map posted on the National Grid website.

The Stoughton Police Department reported on its Facebook page that Central Street was closed during the morning commute. One lane has since reopened, according to Stoughton Police, but police were still suggesting that motorists seek an alternate route.
