Sharon Triathlon Ends In A New York Minute

Overall winner and top female are Empire State residents.

Sunday's Sharon Triathlon began under Seattle-like rain and ended with New York State residents as the top male and female finishers.

Nick Lehecka, 32, of Ithaca, N.Y. won the annual swim, bike and run around Sharon's Lake Massapoag. His total time was 1:11:26, according to the results on www.coolrunning.com.

Jessica Penaherrera-Kang, 25, of New York City was the overall female winner, with a total time of 1:23:17. Penaherrera-Kang was 29th overall among the 510 individuals who finished the event.

The contest started with a half-mile swim off Memorial Park Beach, followed by a 12.3-mile bike ride and a 4.4-mile run. The proceeds benefitted the Sharon Recreation Department.

Max Performance Race Director Tim Richmond said more than 100 beginner triathletes participated Sunday.

"You guys are going to have a great race," he said.

Richmond told the crowd that the run featured "a beautiful shady course all around the lake."

"Everybody, have a great race today," Richmond said.

Matt Pokress, 38, of Arlington finished second, with a time of 1:12:08. Craig Mitchell, 21, of Hanson was third, with a time of 1:14:14.

Among females, Andrea Cox, 42, of Haverhill was second, with a time of 1:23:58. Keri Murray, 34, of Cumberland, R.I. was third, with a time of 1:24:16.

The first Sharon resident to finish was James Lahive, who was 17th, with a time of 1:20:24.
