Sharon Girls Cross-Country Sees Progress

Eagles competing in Saturday's Hockomock League Championships.

The Sharon High School girls cross-country team heads to Saturday's Hockomock League Championships with a math challenge.

The Eagles have fewer runners than many of their opponents. And while Sharon runners have finished first or in the top five at several meets this fall, the competition has won meets by out-numbering them.

Junior Caroline Sun, who captains the team with classmate Sami Kaplan, says winning Saturday at the 3.1-mile course at Borderland State Park in Easton will be "difficult, but our underclassmen are definitely improving."

"They're filling those other spots. Every single meet, we've been telling them to just pick off those people and get the best places they can. And they've been doing that."

Sharon is 2-6 this season (1-4 in its division).

Last Friday, the Eagles defeated Foxborough, 22 to 33, and lost to Mansfield, 28 to 31, at Sharon's Deborah Sampson Park.

Sun and senior Jessica Oknin finished first and second, respectively. Kaplan placed sixth. Sophomore Elise Commons placed 14th, and junior Jessica Chabot 19th.

"I think we're looking pretty good," Kaplan says.

"Toward the end of the season, we actually improved a little bit."
