Sharon Baseball Faces Wellesley in State Opener

The game is at 3 p.m. Saturday at Wellesley.

In a rematch of their 2011 state tournament opener, the Sharon High School varsity baseball team will open the state tournament in Wellesley on Saturday.

The Eagles will play the Raiders in a 2012 Masschusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Baseball South Division 2 tournament game at 3 p.m., according to the MIAA website.

The winner advances to Monday's quarterfinals at fourth-seed Hopkinton (16-4), which received a first-round bye.

The Eagles (8-12) are seeded last in the 12-team bracket. Wellesley (13-7) is seeded fifth.

Sharon defeated Wellesley in a 2011 MIAA Baseball South Division 2 quarterfinal, 4-0, at Sharon.

"They play, obviously, in a tough league, like we do," Eagles head coach Joel Peckham said.

Sharon will start junior tri-captain and southpaw Jake Fishman on Saturday, Peckham said.

"With Jake on the mound, we can beat anybody," he said.

"I'm optimistic."
