NSTAR 'Extremely Supportive' Of Sharon Regarding Snowstorm

Puritz says the utility's resources were 'over-taxed.'

Sharon officials' NSTAR contacts have been "extremely supportive" regarding the Halloween weekend snowstorm, Town Administrator Benjamin Puritz told selectmen tonight.

NSTAR employees were "asking the town for its priorities," which included the Sharon Fire Station and the Sharon Town Offices, among other buildings, Puritz said.

"They were as accommodating as they were able to be under the circumstances," he said.

Puritz said NSTAR told him that 776 Sharon residences, or about 12 percent of the town, were still dark as of 5 p.m. Tuesday.

He expected that fewer homes remained without electricity later that night, when the selectmen's public meeting was wrapping up.

On its website, NSTAR reported that 493, or 7.4 percent, of its 6,652 Sharon customers remained without electricity as of 8 p.m. Tuesday. The utility estimated those outages ending Wednesday evening.

"Their (NSTAR's) resources, frankly, were over-taxed," Puritz said.

Puritz praised Sharon's public works, civil defense, fire and police departments for their work on the storm.

Under the circumstances, I would agree NSTAR got the repairs done as fast as humanly possible. The problem is lack of investment and maintenance in the first place. The result? Obsolete cables, transformers and connections, completely overgrown with vegetation, and lack of "hardened" infrastructure that protects power supply to essential govt. and social functions.

I don't know what the problem is but I am one of that 7% that still has now power which means no heat, no cooking, no running water!!! So I am hardpressed to understand why it takes more than 4 days to get power back!!

Hi Maria,
Where in Sharon are you? How much of your neighborhood remains out?

I'm on South Walpole Street on the other side of 95. It appeared to me that everyone from the beginning of South Walpole Street (South Main St. intersection) up to 95 was restored last night. I have been told by NStar that they will be assessing my house shortly (which was about an hour ago so they should be there now). I don't know if my neighbors going toward Blair Circle have their power yet.

We here on Cedar Street had our power restored almost exactly 24 hours...on the nose...in comparison to 6 days this past summer in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. We didn't have half the damage on our street as we had after Irene....no snapped poles..no 150 yards of lines down...so it made restoration of power much easier. As far as "Priorities...it's winter..it's cold...everyone should be a priority..shelters are great in extreme situations..but no one wants to be in a shelter for long....For those who live in densely tree'd areas on in the outskirts of towm....it be advisable to do what many folks have done..make that investment in a Generator,,that was key to me during Both storms....might not give you every creature comfort one's used to...but it sure takes the edge off of the situation....Get a space heater....hook up the fridge...a few lights...and "The Computer" and stay in touch if possible..planning is a big this as many have discovered this year!!!
