Natick Defeats Sharon Boys Hoop in Davenport Consolation Game

Eagles finish season Wednesday.

In some ways, Monday night's Sharon and Natick high school varsity boys basketball game felt like a baseball game.

"It felt like it was a game of runs -- both ways," Natick head coach Jay Johnson said after his Red and Blue defeated the host Eagles, 74-70, in the consolation game of the 27th annual Dudley Davenport Hoop Classic.

"We didn't really do anything different. I just think the guys executed a little bit more down the stretch. Fortunately for us, we made the last run, because midway through the fourth quarter, Sharon was still up."

Sharon led 62-59 with just under 5 minutes left, thanks to a 6-0 run: a basket by junior forward Ian Beach, and two by sophomore guard James Fritzson.

Natick then used an 11-0 run to lead 70-62 with just over 2 minutes left.

The Red and Blue led 74-68 with 18.5 seconds left.

Sharon then fed Fritzson, among the Eagles' top three-point shooters. However, Sharon managed only a field goal by sophomore guard Brian Mukasa (12 points).

"I just think (Fritzson) got a little tired at the end," Sharon head coach Bruce Jackman said.

"It's going to happen after 32 minutes."

Fritzson, who had 29 points, and was named a tournament all-star, played "extremely well," Jackman said. And Beach finished with a double-double, including 15 points, he noted.

"It was a very good performance by our kids. They played well," Jackman said.

"We missed some foul shots in some key junctions. We didn't get some loose balls that we should have gotten. That's the ballgame. That's the way it is."

Natick (13-7) was led by sophomore guard Alex Hilger's 22 points. Hilger was named to the tournament all-star team. Junior guard Deonte Flounory had 18 and senior captain-forward Bobby Scribner had 10.

Sharon (5-14) ends its season at 3 p.m. Wednesday, hosting Falmouth.
