Sharon Girls Tennis Receives State Preliminary Round Bye

Eagles open state tournament at Apponequet on Friday.

The Sharon High School girls tennis team has drawn a preliminary round bye in the state tournament.

The Eagles (13-5) earned the ninth seed in the 17-team 2012 Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Girls Team Tennis South Division 2 bracket, according to the tournament website.

Sharon will play at eighth-seed Apponequet (14-4) in a first-round match at 4 p.m. Friday, according to the bracket. Apponequet also received a preliminary round bye.

The winner advances to the quarterfinals. They'll play the winner of Saturday's Fontbonne-Bishop Stang/Foxborough first round match. The Fontbonne-Bishop Stang preliminary round match is Friday at Stang.

Foxborough (18-0) is seeded first. Stang (10-10) is 16th and Fontbonne (8-8) is 17th.

Foxborough defeated Sharon, 3-2, in the 2011 tournament first round.

This season, Sharon returned its top two singles players, senior tri-captains Melissa Yuan and Emily Hu; junior Faina Volf, who has starred playing at second or third singles this season; and the first doubles team of senior tri-captain Alannah Waisel and senior Rachel Bashein.
