Gildersleeve Sets SHS 55 Meter Dash Record

Eagles finish seventh at Hockomock League championships Saturday.

Senior co-captain Sara Gildersleeve set a 55 meter dash record during the Hockomock League winter track championships Saturday.

Gildersleeve's time of 7.58 seconds was second to Mansfield junior Kayla Comer, who finished in 7.41 seconds, according to Cool Running. Stoughton junior Ifeoma Okeke was third with a time of 7.68 seconds.

As a team, Sharon finished seventh out of 10, with 20 points, Cool Running reported. Mansfield was first with 87 points at the meet, held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Roxbury.

Finishing in the top six in an event scored points for the team, Sharon throwing coach Alan Conway said.

The Eagles' 4 by 400 relay team of Gildersleeve, juniors Hayley Kats and Meri Kushner and freshman Madison Tippett finished third, with a time of 4:18.46 minutes. Mansfield won the event with a time of 4:08.18 minutes.

Tippett finished fourth in the 600 meters, with a time of 1:43.99 minutes. Franklin junior Kendal Knous won the event with a time of 1:37.83 minutes.

Kushner was sixth in the 55 meter hurdles, with a time of 9.42 seconds. Attleboro senior Terreyana Belin was first, with a time of 8.70 seconds.

Freshman Rita Kushner, Meri's sister, was sixth in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 10 inches. Mansfield senior Kristen McDonagh was first with a leap of 5 feet, 4 inches.

Sharon also got top 10 performances from senior co-captain Caroline McClain, who was eighth in the mile, with a time of 5:56.89 minutes; junior Jessica Oknin, who was eighth in the two-mile, with a time of 13:00.55 minutes; and Kats, who was ninth in the 300 meter dash, with a time of 45.36 seconds.

Kats' time was a personal best and qualified her for the state meet, Conway said.
