Eagles Girls Hoop Can Clinch State Tournament Spot Tonight

Sharon needs one win in its final three games.

The Sharon High School varsity girls basketball team might celebrate their graduation as well as their Senior Night tonight.

The Eagles (9-8) will clinch a state tournament spot if they defeat visiting Burncoat. The game starts at 6:30 p.m.

Sharon will honor its seniors -- tri-captains and guards Anne Fritzson, Melissa Mulvany and Jessica Shenkel -- before the game.

The Eagles need one win in their final three games to reach the state tournament, after Thursday night's 40-32 Hockomock League Crossover Classic win over host Attleboro, Sharon head coach Kate Horsmann said.

Sharon trailed 18-11 at halftime, Horsmann said.

The Eagles then "settled down offensively in the third quarter, played much better defense and finally started to box out and keep Attleboro off of the offensive boards," she said.

Sharon led 24-22 opening the fourth quarter. However, Attleboro fought back and reclaimed the lead, 27-24.

Sharon then went on a 12-1 run, launched by two Shenkel free throws, Horsmann said. And then, with 3:20 left, sophomore guard Lily Abarbanel hit a three-pointer, giving Sharon a 2-point lead. Abarbanel finished the game with 9 points, all in the fourth quarter, Horsmann said.

Junior guard "Katie Lowerre had a big rebounding night, and her offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter gave us quality second chance opportunities," the coach added.

Sophomore guard Karlie O'Driscoll led all scorers with 15 points.

After tonight, Sharon finishes its regular season at home, with the Sharon Girls Showcase.
