Community Support After Yankee Kennels Fire Was 'Great'

Ed Little says the barn rebuilding is about a week from completion.

, the barn will re-open, rebuilt, very shortly, with a change outside.

An American flag that flew in Afghanistan will fly there, Yankee Kennels owner Ed Little told selectmen Tuesday night.

Little said the flag was a gift from a soldier, who asked her father to bring it to the North Main Street stables.

Little said the late-night three-alarm fire on Nov. 9, 2010 caused "devastation that was left that was unbelievable."

He noted that he served 36 years on the Sharon Fire Department, and "I ran fires, put out fires."

The Sharon community's support helped him deal with the fire, said Little, who noted that he and all three selectmen grew up here.

"You don't realize living in a small town like this what a great thing it is," he said.

"The outpouring I had from people, you'll never understand how great it is."

A 6-year-old boy sent him a card with $3 inside, Little said.

The youngster, Little said, wrote, "Dear Eddie, I'm sorry for the loss of your animals. I'm sorry for the loss of your barn," and asked that the money inside go toward the repairs.

"That was the type of outpouring I had," Little said.

Sharon's animal inspector, Little discussed the fire after discussing his proposed fiscal 2013 budget with the board.

"You may not be rich on your animal inspector salary, but you're certainly rich in friends," Selectmen Chairman Richard Powell said.
