Sharon Selectmen Take Request For Foxborough Casino Position Under Advisement

A resident asked the board to at least let Foxborough selectmen know how they stand.

The Sharon Board of Selectmen should at least take a position on the Foxborough casino debate, Sharon resident Cheryl Weinstein said tonight.

The board took Weinstein's request for a letter to the Foxborough Board of Selectmen under advisement.

"At a minimum, we should at least lay out what type of role the statute does lay out for surrounding communities," Chairman Richard Powell said.

Weinstein said she feels the proposed casino on Route 1 in Foxborough would be "very detrimental" to Sharon.

Officials from Norfolk, Wrentham and other neighboring communities have met to discuss the casino, Weinstein said.

Sharon should participate, "because we're part of this wider community," she said.

Sharon selectmen should also take a position and send their Foxborough counterparts a letter stating it, either way, she said.

Powell said the Sharon board members have been approached on this issue.

However, "we're not prepared to act on it tonight," he said.

asked readers, "Would a casino on Route 1 in Foxborough bring more traffic and crime to Sharon?"

As of 8:55 tonight, the poll had drawn 90 votes: 64 said yes and 26 said no.

One resident, Matthew Baldassari, told Sharon Patch he has signed an online petition for No Foxboro Casino asking businessman Robert Kraft to withdraw his proposal to lease land on Route 1 in Foxborough to Wynn Resorts Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO Steve Wynn for development of a casino.

That volunteer group's next information open house is from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Union Church of South Foxboro.
